The loop trail along the river was a lovely area to explore.
Due north of Hovland, Minnesota, along the Minnesota/Ontario border where the Pigeon River leaves South Fowl Lake. Alpine plants from the Rocky Mountains and the White Mountains of New Hampshire are joined by arctic plants from near Hudson Bay. Also, there is a large, handmade sign that reads “Middle Falls, 7 miles —>” at the beginning of the loop that is very misleading. It is a very scenic river. Fairly easy trail with some areas with roots and rocks (typical for North Shore trails), one steep, but definitely manageable, uphill. Would have been a decent hike if the foliage was not so overgrown on the middle loop. There are many species of warblers, sparrows, waterfowl, and raptors that nest or migrate through the border country.

The Border Route Hiking Trail crosses the property. Middle Falls is not very well know but worth the visit. Your actions can have a real impact for our natural world. We are of average health, frequent hikers, and are in our late 20’s-early 30’s. Park here and walk north on the narrow road for a little more than ¼ mile. | It is who we are and how we work that has brought more than 65 years of tangible lasting results. I was hesitant but am glad we hiked it. The best part of this long steep hike were the trees- the winding paths through mature aspen, birch and spruce.
In 2002, The Conservancy acquired 750 acres on the Ontario side of the river near Middle Falls. A remarkable landscape feature of the Border Country—the Rove Slate Hills—are home to a unique assemblage of arctic and alpine plants. Vote. Hiked this today with my wife and daughters (8 & 10). The Falls can be reached from Grand Portage State Park or Pigeon River Provincial park. Other hikers turned back now but we trudged on. Someone else recommended hiking poles and I agree. PHONE: Most definitely yes. Bald eagles are a common sight over the preserve. This is one of those experiences that wasn't always fun at the time but looking back was fun and also an accomplishment. The Trail towards the end to Pigeon was overgrown but easy to follow. The Pigeon River Country is home to two unique associations of plants that are disjunct from their home ranges. Stand up for our natural world with The Nature Conservancy. Some trails or park services may be closed this weekend so check with local authorities before heading out. We measured our hike to be 5.5 miles RT if you include the High Falls.
The park is designed for day use only and contains mixed hardwood-conifer forests and hiking trails along the banks of the Pigeon River. Nice all the way. Very scenic rewards! The trails were dry for most part, would definitely not try it if they were thought to be wet or any recent rain. This trail became known as "The Grand Portage." Beautiful scenery. Follow the Border Route trail up and along the cliffs, returning the way you came. Wonderful variety of terrain, including some stairs and various uphill/downhill climbs.
You have to climb over 300 feet vertically each way. If you’re not a hiker, this may not be the trail for you; trekking poles recommended. Not an easy hike but rewarding for the kids. After the first big climb we were rewarded with a beautiful view of Lake Superior and a bench to rest our weary feet. Middle and High Falls of the Pigeon River – the 120-foot High Falls are the highest waterfalls located partially within Minnesota (the highest falls totally within Minnesota are the falls at Tettegouche State Park).
