2 separate cables for gpu

I would use one cable per connection if available. Such a pain to see a $120 PSU not be prepared for top notch cards.

So, I used the included MSI Adapter for 6 to 8 Pin for one card. Pessut

Obviously the best situation would be to use two separate set of cables to split the current draw and make heat a complete non-issue even if you had shitty 20AWG cabling, but then you have to think about whether routing another set of cables will have any impact on airflow. Started 10 minutes ago I don´t know what it means exactly or how to find out from the box or the manual whether it is single or multi rail.

Can it be changed in software? Started 17 minutes ago

I came across an article saying you shouldn't use just the Y split cable that came with the psu.

Connecting the two 8-pin connectors with two separate non daisy chained cables is fine. Obviously the best situation would be to use two separate set of cables to split the current draw and make heat a complete non-issue even if you had shitty 20AWG cabling, but then you have to think about whether routing another set of cables will have any impact on airflow.

Someone set a SSD on fire by mixing his cables. Jex

The reason i´m asking is because IIRC a multi rail power supply can use one rail for each pcie cable and thus make it even safer/ stable or something like that.

Seeing as people order custom cables from CableMod all of the time, etc.

Posted in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory, By If your card uses a 6 pin and an 8 pin, then the max it's ever going to look to draw from pcie power is 225W, and that is way above what a 1080 will ever draw without heavy overclocking. Cookies help us deliver our Services.

That particular PSU uses 16g, which is better than the typically used 18g (a lot of the aftermarket cables, like the sleeved ones, only use 18g).

I've been using my previous GTX 780 using two seperate dual 6+2 pin PCI-e connectors, one for the 8-pin connector and the other for the 6-pin one, and have used these same two dual PCI-e connector leads for my new GTX 980. Jimpan I have an evga 850bq psu and an Asus Rog strix 1080 gpu. Now I have a question. You can use either one, most people recommend using two separate cables. Posted in General Discussion, By By using our Services or clicking I agree, you agree to our use of cookies. Stygian Zenith Started 31 minutes ago Rinse repeat. Unless you're super heavily overclocking your gpu, it really shouldn't make a difference. Started August 31, By From the PSU side of things, the power is all being generated on one rail anyway (as long as it's a relatively modern psu, atx 2.3+), so you won't gain any efficiency benefits.

That'll have more impact on performance than having current over two sets of pcie cables. Is my power supply multi rail or single rail? Just looked up your psu. Haveri

Typically using two separate cables is more stable if you're overclocking. It uses 18AWG for the pcie cables, so your 1080 is going to be comfortably well below the stressing factor of the cable, even with all current over one set. i9 9900K @ 5.0 GHz, NH D15, 32 GB GSKILL Trident Z RGB, AORUS Z390 MASTER, EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra, Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500GB, Samsung 860 EVO 1TB, Samsung 860 EVO 500GB, ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q 27", Steel Series APEX PRO, Logitech Gaming Pro Mouse, CM Master Case 5, Corsair AXI 1600W Titanium. As current goes up, resistance goes up, voltage goes down, so to meet a required wattage, more current needs to be delivered, and voltage goes down more.

It's easy! Follow these simple rules in life, and I promise you, things magically get easier. " The gpu has 2 8 pin connectors so i wonder if it is worth it to use two separate 6+2 pin pcie cables instead of one cable with two 6+2 pin pcie connectors.

There is nothing "wrong" with being wrong.

Should I add a second just to take the load of the one cable?

The Y split means you'll be pulling more current over one set of cables, but so long as they aren't super thin 20 gauge cables they will still be able to supply up to ~280W without any noticeable heat. It's easy! It will work without any issues. If you're not overclocking, using just the single daisy chained 8 pin cable to 2 connectors should be fine.
